Nicaragua: Rise in Chinese investments and mining concessions raises concerns among environmentalists and indigenous communities
In recent years, Nicaragua has significantly increased Chinese investments in the country as part of a strategic alliance that has strengthened since the break with Taiwan in 2021. In the case of mining concessions, these cover vast areas of national territory, particularly concentrated in the North Caribbean region and other rural zones.
The expansion of these projects has raised concerns among environmental organizations and Indigenous communities, who denounce potential ecological damage, lack of prior consultation, and the creation of zones with unclear regulations.
