Japan: Alleged sexual misconduct involving Fuji TV employees reveals sexual exploitation of women in entertainment & media
An independent investigative committee set up by Fuji Television Network Inc. and its parent company Fuji Media Holdings Inc. has released a troubling report into allegations of sexual assault by former TV personality Masahiro Nakai, determining the case involved "sexual violence as an extension of work" targeting a female announcer then employed by Fuji TV.
Fuji TV Vice Chairman Ryunosuke Endo explained that female workers, such as newscasters, obtain job opportunities by going to venues for wining and dining business clients as “it is up to various people to decide which newscasters should appear in programs.”
TBS Television, TV Asahi, Nippon TV, and TV Tokyo each reported regarding surveys they conducted into the relationships between co-stars and their employees in the press conference they held in April 2025
TBS Television confirmed four new cases in which announcers were victimised. TV Asahi published a "Compliance Handbook" focused on human rights. Each company announced its intention to tackle human rights violations.
Scandals and suspicions over unwanted acts and sexual assaults in showbiz and media circles have spread against the background of power dynamics and other circumstances.
