[....Regardless of legal applicability, NKG, as one of the most influential actors in the coffee sector, bears a responsibility to uphold rigorous due diligence standards in line with international human rights and environmental expectations. The structural issues identified in our report — including precarious working conditions, economic exploitation of smallscale farmers, and the opacity surrounding financial transactions linked to public funds — demand more than voluntary commitments. They demand concrete actions. A responsible corporate actor must ensure transparency and accountability throughout its supply chain, whether or not it falls under a specific legal mandate. Additionally, the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which comes into effect January 2026, mandates due diligence requirements for commodities like coffee linked to deforestation and also comprises legality requirements which would preclude sourcing from child labor, forced labor, bonded labor. Given NKG’s central role in global coffee supply chains, it is imperative that the company ensures compliance with evolving legal standards and aligns its business practices with environmental and human rights commitments.
