Peru: Protesters Demand Greater Benefits from Las Bambas Mine

Protesters near Peru’s Las Bambas copper mine agreed to lift a road blockade after reaching a deal with the mine’s owner, China’s Minerals and Metals Group (MMG). The protests began over a week ago when a meeting between local residents from Velille, in Cusco’s Chumbivilcas province, and company representatives failed to resolve their demands for greater benefits from the mine.

We invited MMG to comment on the allegations of failing to secure benefits for local communities from the mining activities at the Las Bambas mine. The company responded.
