Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt's response to Joint Letter by 25 CSOs on a potential Nickel Smelter Project in Indonesia
[Unofficial translation from Chinese to English provided by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre ]
"Huayou Cobalt has always adhered to the investment philosophy of “contributing to the local economy and society wherever we invest”, and attaches great importance to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. We fully understand the sustainability challenges of the nickel processing industry in Indonesia and are committed to responsible operations there.
It should be noted that the industry data cited in the joint letter since 2000 (including deforestation and industrial casualty statistics for 2015-2022) are industry-wide historical data and are not directly related to Huayou's Indonesia project.
Since its operation, our Indonesia investment project has strictly followed Indonesian and international standards, and has obtained: ISO 14001 environmental management system certification, ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system certification, and Indonesia SMK3 occupational health standardization certification. Meanwhile, Huayu Indonesia projects are subject to regular independent audits in accordance with globally recognized responsible sourcing standards, including the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas."
