Mitsui Corporation's response to CSOs' call for retraction of investment decision

26 April 2024

Thank you for your email.

Let me address the concerns you raised about natural gas and environment, human rights and Myanmar military connections in the civil society statement.

With respect to the environment and greenhouse gas emissions, Vietnamʼs energy transition strategy in line with the Paris Agreement is to switch from coal-fired power generation to lower carbon gas-fired alternatives which will reduce emissions. The countryʼs Eighth National Power Development Plan released last year sets out ambitious renewable energy capacity growth alongside a clear role for natural gas and includes this development in its plan.

Mitsui & Co. continues to invest in energy sector to ensure secure, affordable, and reliable energy to support economic and social development during the energy transition while committing to halve GHG Impact by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050, with the former target including efforts to reduce emissions of methane and other non-CO2 greenhouse gases.

In terms of Myanmar and human rights, Mitsui is closely monitoring its interests in the country and is compliant with international sanctions. In our global operations, we respect human rights in line with international standards. We support the UN Guiding Principles on

Business and Human Rights and the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact.
